(Fans chanted to the tune of the World Cup Song, replacing “Africa” with “Roaring Creek” in “it’s time for Africa!”)... The chant reverberated across the bleachers behind home plate throughout the finals of the National Women’s Softball Championship yesterday at Rogers Stadium, where Roaring Creek fans were joined by their rival village Camalote fans in riding their “west” team to victory over Belize City’s defending champion Mirage Lady Rebels. In between innings, the D.J. entertained the audience with selected music, but by the time of the finals, one particular song had captured the mood of the Roaring Creek fans, and it became their cheering anthem the rest of the way to the championship.

Interoffice basketball has passed its midway point, and from here onwards will be the separation of the contenders from the pretenders. Defending champs, Belize City Council is sitting pretty good atop division A with a perfect (5-0) record, while in division B, Tuff E Nuff Tours and FCIB/Quan’s Trading apparently are heading for a head to head showdown, with both of them still undefeated at (6-0) and (5-0), respectively. Other post season hopefuls are the Roe Group, Youth for the Future and dark-horses Police and KHMH. In division B, Atlantic Bank and Guardian/Housing are in the driver’s seat, with Alamilla’s/Cellular Plus and BTL still with a shot at making the post season. This past Monday night, two games were lost via default. This phenomenon is nothing strange, and is typical this time of the year when the men begin separating themselves from the boys. In any event, in the only game played on the court it was Alamilla’s/Cellular Plus winning over BWSL by the score of 58-46, behind Michael Plunkett 18 pts 6 rebs and Marlon Middleton 14 pts 5 rebs. BWSL, who with the loss fell to (2-5) on the year, were led by Charles Armstrong 12 pts 6 rebs and Lawrence Young 11 pts 3 rebs.

Ownership of the Belize Chess Federation (BCF) is shared by every Belizean who cares about their children’s involvement; the children who participate; the associated groups and individuals who place their quality time and effort in program designations, preparations and promotions; the media personnel and companies who proffer us their special services in item promotions free of cost; and certainly, even without having to say, by those who invest hard earned invaluable currency into our projects. All together they contribute to the development and progress of projects of the Belize Chess Federation, shaping a tool that is bringing potential young minds by the hundreds together in Belize, to sharpen their wits in a board game situation capable of affording a channel to positively and constructively vent overly gathered adrenaline in a controlled atmosphere, rather than deploying their young energies at various community sectors negatively and venomously.
