A search party formed by citizens of Orange Walk District, the police and members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) were today able to retrieve the body of Efrain Perez, 40, along with that of a family friend, Lisbeth Cardenas, 21, a secretary, both presumed dead yesterday after a skiff in which they were travelling, along with five others, overturned yesterday in Honey Camp Lagoon.
Reports are that the boat was going very fast, and the captain slowed it down, but apparently too quickly. Waves following the boat washed into the stern, swamping the craft.
The body of Efrain’s wife, Anaceli Perez, was retrieved from the water almost immediately after the incident occurred.
Police said that sometime around 6:00 p.m. yesterday, they were called to the Honey Camp area of Orange Walk, where they had been told that a small skiff with five persons aboard had overturned in the lagoon, almost a mile wide.
Efrain, Anaceli, Lisbeth, and Margarita Medina, 45, an accountant at Bowen and Bowen in Orange Walk, as well as Leoni Sanchez, 20, were thrown into the water when the skiff overturned.
Of the five persons, only two, Margarita and Leoni were able to swim to safety. They immediately formed a search party, said police, and were then able to retrieve Anaceli’s body from the water.
This morning, the search party was back at it again, and shortly after 11:00 they found Lisbeth’s body. She was found about one hundred yards from where the incident occurred. It was not until after 4:00 this evening, however, that they found Efrain’s body. He was found a couple yards from where Lisbeth had been found.
Police said that Anaceli Perez had four children; Efrain and Anaceli were husband and wife, and the others were friends.
