Dear Editor,

This is really a plea to Dean Barrow and the other 30 candidates from the UDP. I am watching with fear and anxiety as I see the PUP strategizing and positioning selected candidates to win certain seats in Belize City. I am familiar with what’s going on in Belize City, and I can only assume they are doing the same in the districts in those seats that they have targeted to focus their energies and resources to win the general election. Another term of PUP … what an utterly frightening thought!

Despite all the corruption scandals, arrogance and greed stuffed down our throats on a daily basis on the talk shows about the PUP Ministers and party loyalists, the PUP is still able to wiggle its way back to win favor with some citizens and emerge as an extremely formidable opponent. Why? The fact that there is even a discussion about a possible PUP victory in this climate illustrates a huge VACUUM on the side of the UDP. A bad PUP government does not automatically equal a UDP victory! Wake up, UDP.

I am a lifelong UDP supporter and know most of the candidates personally, and I can tell you that half of them are sleeping. Who is the face of the UDP? All I see is Dean Barrow and Michael Finnegan. And, with all due respect to the Honorable member of the House, Finnegan should not be a main face for the UDP. He knows how to win elections but, let’s get real, he is crude, selfish and disrespectful. That congregation at Farmers Market on Saturdays is not helping the party’s image – all the drinking, cursing, arguments … oh no. and don’t tell me that is connecting at the grassroots level. Not because people are poor, that means they don’t have class.

On the other hand, I have tremendous respect for Boots and believe that he brings the right image to appeal to the grassroots voters. Enough of Patrick Faber’s antics in the House. He needs to back up that supposed passion and anger and do some work for the people in Collet. The complaints are rampant that Collet residents don’t see their Area Representative. Talk about image; he is the perfect poster boy for the UDP to appeal to the young people, who incidentally, are the majority of our population. Wasted resource.

Where is George Gough? Rumour has it that he has already conceded defeat.   Disgraceful. If you are too cheap or unmotivated to work, just step aside. Musa is probably the most hated man in this country right now and you are telling me that you cannot even put up a decent fight?! Get a grip, man.

And, what about Carlos Perdomo? Another wasted resource. He is the face of integrity and compassion, so why is he hiding?   If the UDP is going to preach about good governance, they had better put somebody up there who embodies that sentiment.

To me, Sedi is too caught up in his own world and ideologies to be a team player, but he will bring some brains and experience to a UDP government, but they have to win first. He has a tough job in Pickstock but if he gets out there and kicks ass, he might just be able to pull it off.

I left Mike Peyrefitte for the last because he is the perfect example in politics of what NOT to do on television. Politics 101, DO NOT accept an interview to defend yourself and not be prepared. DO NOT get on TV and say $30,000 is a little bit of money when 70% of your country’s population is poor. DO NOT act like an arrogant ass when you want people to vote for you. I was so excited when I saw Mike’s banners brightening up Freetown and I was reliably informed that he was out on the streets campaigning. My hopes were very high. Now, all I can say is, whatever.

Hold Hope High is the slogan of the UDP. Well, they need to back that up. Let me add here that, in no way, I am disregarding all the hard work the UDP has put in. If not for the UDP, we would not know about 80% of all the corrupt PUP deals. They have been relentless in uncovering all the corruption and exposing this government for the lying, thiefing, cold bunch they are. The UDP has led and supported civic actions and been on the forefront for change. I also applaud my party big time for the bold steps they are taking with the Reform Agenda.

This is all good stuff, but now we are heading for the finish line. This is no time to slack off. All 31 candidates should be angry and hungry and we in the public should feel it. Come on, let’s get serious and move this corrupt crowd. We are ready to follow but we need leaders to lead. (Taking from UDP’s new song) Fi U, fi me, fi all a we, Tighten up, Please, and let us win this election!

I suggest that if Amandala prints this letter, the UDP should photocopy and circulate to all its candidates; not because it is a masterpiece, but because this is how a lot of YOUR UDP supporters feel. For real.

More questions than answers in murder of Christopher Galvez, 23
• Galvez’ family upset with police’s behavior; Ministry of National Security appoints inquiry team... The first of four murders in the Christmas season is perhaps the most puzzling. A 23-year-old man with everything to live for went out with a friend, ostensibly on an errand, but ended up dead, leaving his 1- year-old son orphaned and his family grieving.
Jim Baxter, rest in peace
• Jim Baxter died today. His real name and picture are in Sports, sin and subversion. I’m glad now that I got the chance to talk to him before the book went to press. Jim Baxter was one of the football personalities who made the MCC Grounds such a wonderful, exciting experience on weekends in the 1960s and 1970s. He loved football and he lived football.
“Panta” gunned down at family’s apartment during evening news
• Residents of the Ebony and Sarstoon Street area continue to struggle with the crushing loss of a prominent sportsman and area resident to gunfire shortly after the Christmas weekend.
Lusby Martinez, 25, the alleged grenade thrower, is charged with murder
• With his head bent low to avoid the media’s cameras that were focused on him, Lusby Martinez was escorted from the police holding cell to the #1 Magistrate’s Court, where he appeared in front of Chief Magistrate, Margaret Gabb-McKenzie, who arraigned him on a single count of murder and other related charges in connection with the City’s fifth grenade incident that claimed a minor’s life in the Kraal Road area of the city.
Standstill at Tower Hill
• Sugar cane deliveries are again at a standstill today, as things took an unfortunate turn at about 1:10 this afternoon, when the Belize Sugar Industries at Tower Hill, Orange Walk, lost power, reportedly after transformer failure.
Gold, silver, lead at Chiquibul
• Caribbean company explores... Belize, particularly the Cayo District, is being explored for its store of precious metals, such as gold and silver, as well as lead and other associated metals—tin and zinc. How much of these metals are buried underneath the surface of the Chiquibul area in western Belize is uncertain, but a letter dated August 15, 1978, made available to our newspaper recently, suggests that there may be more “wealth untold” in The Jewel than Belizeans know.
From The Publisher
• I asked four of UBAD’s former officers to sit with me on New Year’s Day morning. These were Galento X Neal, Ismail Shabazz, Rufus X and Wilfred Nicholas, Sr. These men had joined with me in hosting Norman “Imamu” Fairweather, another former UBAD official, at a dinner in September last year. (Norman lives in New York.) I reported to you on that September reception, pointing out that it was of a social rather than an organizational nature.
In remembrance of Arthur Innis Barrow
• Mr. Arthur Innis Barrow, Senior Pharmacist of the Ministry of Health, was the son of Ebenezer Oliver Bunting Barrow, an able public officer in British Honduras, and his wife, Iris, the first lady of the south side, whose love and devotion to her family and neighbours calmed the rambunctious and disorderly conduct of the visitors of the famous “Water Lane,” and the charming and beautiful neighbours on both sides of the canal.
Female lawyers battle for Belize
• While the men lawyers line up to follow di money, women lawyers in Belize battle for justice. Add the name of Mrs. Audrey Matura Shepperd alongside Ms. Lois Young (the battle for BTL), Ms. Antoinette Moore (the battle for the rights of our brothers and sisters in Toledo), and Mrs. Candy Gonzalez (the battle for clean water, and the rights of river dwellers).
