Mr. Wilfred P. Elrington
Host
Exposure
KREM Radio/Television
Belize City

Dear Mr. Elrington,

On your program, “Exposure”, which was aired on KREM Radio/Television on September 9, 2007, you informed your listeners that one of your colleagues who bought a Belize international postal money order was unable to cash the said postal money order at the United States Post Office (USPS). You further informed your listeners that the Government of Belize did not have sufficient funds in their account in the United States to facilitate the encashment of the postal money order.

I wish to inform you that your statement is untrue. The truth is that neither the Government of Belize nor the Belize Post Office has an account in the United States to facilitate the encashment of Belize international postal money orders. The USPS cashes Belize international postal money orders but there is no need for us to send funds to them to do so. The reason for this is because the Belize Post Office also cashes United States international postal money orders and we have always paid out more funds to cash United States international postal money orders than they have paid out to cash Belize international postal money orders.

Therefore, at the end of the accounting period, the USPS is required to reimburse us an amount of funds after they have deducted the amount which was paid out to cash Belize international postal money orders. As an example, in 2006, the Belize Post Office paid out $BZ 3,095,948.02 to cash United States international postal money orders, while the USPS paid out $BZ 99,852.49 to cash Belize international postal money orders. As a result, the USPS had to reimburse us an amount of $BZ 2,996,095.53, which was the difference between the amount we paid and the amount they paid.

In view of the above, the USPS cannot refuse to cash Belize international postal money orders due to insufficient funds. If indeed the USPS refused to cash your colleague’s Belize international postal money order, then I would conclude that an error was made by the employee of the USPS.

If you ask your colleague to get in touch with me or if you provide her contact details to me, I will ensure that her postal money order is cashed without delay.

The Belize international postal money order is a safe and affordable means of transferring funds from Belize to international destinations and I encourage more of our customers to utilize this service.

I would be grateful if, in the future, you would get in touch with me to answer any concerns you may have regarding the functions of the Belize Post Office to ensure that your listeners are not misinformed. I would also be grateful if you would retract your statement in the next episode of your program.

Thank you for your attention.
Yours truly,
Elston Wade
Ag. Postmaster General

DR. GAYLE’S RESPONSE
• TO THE RESPONSES TO THE MALE SOCIAL PARTICIPATION AND VIOLENCE STUDY... I want to use this medium to respond to the varied responses to the Report – ninety percent of which have been positive, the other 10 percent ranging from misguided to plain disappointing. I want to inform the 10 percent that most of the very shallow things whispered in Belize about the research reached me within 24 hours from people I have never met – strangely not from my research team (that seems to believe that it is better not to inform me of these things).
