A case file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for “perusal and directives,” said police, with regard to an accident that took place on October 4, in which George Garbutt and not Gerald Garbutt as reported by the police, was knocked down by Sergeant Hector Rodriguez, attached to the Traffic Branch at the Eastern Division, who was driving a motorcycle.
Garbutt, 79, succumbed to his injuries this morning, at 3:00 a.m.
Garbutt lived at #21 Kraal Road, but the accident occurred between Miles 2 and 3, on the Western Highway.
According to Rodriguez, he was driving his motorcycle from the direction of Belize City toward the Western Highway checkpoint when he saw a man walking a dog on the right hand side of the road. He swerved to the right, said Rodriguez, but the man swung in the same direction and even though he applied brakes, he could not avoid knocking down the man.
Both he and the man fell to the ground, said police. Rodriguez sustained abrasions to both elbows, a cut wound to the right knee and right palm and the man, later identified as Garbutt, sustained head injuries and abrasions to the left foot.
Both persons were taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where Rodriguez was treated and released and Garbutt was admitted to ward.
The motorcycle, which is the property of the Police Department, had all lights damaged and the handlebar was twisted, said police.
Garbutt had been released however, on Friday last, and died at home fourteen days after the incident, police added.
A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow on Garbutt’s body to certify the cause of death.
