The police investigation into a case of aggravated burglary in which Monica Mendez, 24, was beaten in her home and robbed, has resulted in the arrest of two of three suspects - Delbert Hinds, 28 and Ryan Neal, 17. The third suspect, Herbert “Kid” Velasquez, remains at large.
Hinds and Neal, both residents of Belize City, were charged with aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary when they appeared in the #2 Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, December 18. Magistrate Mrs. Dorothy Flowers remanded them into custody until January 17, 2008.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on December 8. Mendez, who resides in Corozalito with her two sons, reported to the police that she was at home in the village with her children when there was a knock on her door by someone claiming to be the police.
Mendez said when she opened her front door, three persons rushed inside, one of them armed with a pistol. The intruders tied her to a chair and demanded money. When she refused to cooperate they beat her until she told them where she had the money, she told police. She also said they threatened to kill her and her sons.
Mendez reported that the intruders stole $1,478.00, a 16-gauge shotgun, a blue generator, a 19-inch color television, a DVD player, a chainsaw, 2 machetes, 3 knives, an extension cord and a Honda 5.5 horsepower water pump.
She said she managed to untie herself when the culprits went outside.
On Friday, December 14, the police apprehended Neal in Ladyville.
Hinds was picked up in Belize City by the police on Monday, December 17. He has two previous convictions, one for handling stolen goods and one for robbery.
