Glenford Grant, the accused murderer of his own father, Clifton Grant, was arraigned in Magistrate Aretha Ford’s courtroom today, Tuesday, May 18, 2010, to be read a charge of murder.
Glenford, 26, an unemployed of # 5 Oleander Street, Belize City, appeared in court without a shirt, footwear or representation, and was explained the charge brought upon him; no plea was taken from Grant due to the indictable charge.
However, he responded in the affirmative to the charges.
Clifton Grant, 80, father of the accused, was badly beaten and left in a comatose state, allegedly by his own son, the accused, around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 14, 2010, at the family home at #5 Oleander Street.
Present at the home witnessing the attack, which allegedly was provoked by the father’s refusal to hand over 25 cents for cigarettes, was a 12-year-old minor.
“He asked my father to loan him 25 cents for a cigarette, and he got upset,” said the 31-year-old daughter of the deceased.
“I don’t know what emotions to have,” the daughter said.
“The family is taking it bad; we can’t believe it. …it was not something we expected because that was my father’s ‘eyeball,’” the daughter explained.
While Grant’s appearance during the court proceedings seemed to indicate a mentally disturbed individual, he was normal, his sister told us, saying that she had no such knowledge of her brother being mentally challenged.
“The only thing that’s wrong with him is that he needs to find a job,” she said.
Amandala also enquired about the minor, the 12-year-old granddaughter of the deceased and niece of the accused who witnessed the fatal beating and also called for assistance.
“She is taking it hard. …she can’t even go back to school,” the victim’s daughter stated.
The family, in grief, made their way out to the back of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court House in order to catch a glimpse of their relative now turned accused murderer, being transported in the police bus to the Belize Central Prison in Hattieville. They uttered no words, just stared in disbelief.
Magistrate Ford had informed Grant of his reappearance date, which will be in the Belize City Supreme Court on July 1, 2010.
